A group of third year students of Department of Statistics & Computer Science, Faculty of science, University of Kelaniya visited Ansell Textiles Pvt. Ltd, Seeduwa on  11^th of December 2018. The primary objective of this visit was to get familiar with the industry and its working procedure as well as the experience the real world applications of Statistics. The participants received a vast knowledge about the production process, the way of applying statistical quality control techniques in production process, the Six Sigma concept and also the carrier opportunities in Ansell textile Lanka (PVT) Ltd. The industrial visit provided an insight on how companies work and also useful information related to the practical aspects of the courses which cannot be visualized in lectures.

The industrial visit was organized under the guidance of Dr. (Mrs). A. P. Hewaarachchi, Senior Lecturer, Department of Statistics & Computer science, University of Kelaniya, with the support of the Mr. Lahiru Fernando, Statistician, and Mrs. Devendra Jayawardana, Manager – Human Resources, Ansell textile Lanka (PVT) Ltd.

Modeling weeks have been running in foreign countries for the last three decades in order to give hands on experience of mathematical/ statistical/ computational modeling in many disciplinarians. Although, this was a novel idea for Sri Lanka, a modeling week was successfully conducted in 2016 during the Research and Academic Collaboration (RACP) program of Department of Statistics & Computer Science. Outcome of this modeling week program was visible in the student performances, in particularly indicated by the performances through students’ industrial training success as well as quality of final year research project. Thus, the department expect to organize the modeling week in this year too under the patronage of University soft skills development program.

Objectives

The main aims of the modeling week are to train students to solve real word problems using computational modeling techniques, help them choose research topics related to computational modeling and to promote the use of computational methods and models in industry. Also this would encourage collaboration, increase research confidence and enhance soft skills.

Target Group

The proposed Industrial Modeling Week program is aimed at Science undergraduates, who are following honors degree programs. Additionally, Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Social Sciences students, who are following Computer Studies honors program will be targeted as well.

Methodology

Students are assigned to work in small groups on projects relating to real world problems. On the first day, international/local experts introduce the problems, which were formulated in non-technical terms. Each group is supervised by an international/local expert who given more information pertaining the problem. The group work for a week and present their work and findings on the last day of the week and then write up as a report. The solutions to the real world problem are evaluated based on industrial benchmarks. Best teams are selected by a panel of expertise including the supervisors.

Significance

This program is a platform for students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real world problem from the Industry. Thus they can gain a valuable experience on handling real world issues under the supervision of experts in the Industry. Students get a great opportunity to work with the experts.  Thus the proposed program is   helpful to expands industry linkages. Students will improve their analytical skills, team work, communication skills and leadership skills.

Dr. N. V. Chandrasekara was awarded SLASS GRC Postgraduate Research Award 2018 Section E1 (merit) by Sri Lanka Association for Advancement of Science (SLASS) on 2^nd December 2018 at BMICH. The chief guests of the ceremony were the Honorable President Maithreepala Sirisena, Minister Sarath Amunugama and Dr. Sarath Gunapala. In the selection procedure, winners were selected based on the applicant’s publications on his/her postgraduate research and more credit was given for publications in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Chandrasekara's PhD research was supervised by Dr. Chandima Tilakaratne of University of Colombo and Dr. Musa Mammadov of Federation University Australia.

The Department of Statistics & Computer Science together with the Statistics & Computer Science Students’ Association (SCSSA) at the University of Kelaniya has conducted a community project on 07^th – 10^th December 2018 at CP/WT/Araththana Kanishta Vidyalaya, Madol Kale, Waththegama, Kandy. We have renovated the school main hall on 07^th, 08^th and 09^th December 2018. The handing over ceremony was held at 10^th December 2018 at the school premises. Undergraduates of our Department have conducted brief mathematics sessions in the morning of the 10^th December 2018. Evening, the handing over the session and the prize distribution were held at the renovated school main hall.
