Mr. J.L.S.M. Kumara of the Department of Statistics & Computer Science won the Gold Medal at the Best Undergraduate Research Project Award 2019 awarded by the Institute of Applied Statistics Sri Lanka (IASSL) for the research titled ‘Influence of the Factors Associated with Suicides: A Case Study for the Kelaniya Police Division in Sri Lanka' supervised by Dr. N.V. Chandrasekara. The Award was presented at the academic sessions & eighth annual general meeting of IASSL held at board room of Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayawardhanepura on 1st November 2019.

Dr. A. P. Hewaarachchi, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Statistics & Computer Science won the Presidential Award for Scientific Research based on the research publication on A. P. Hewaarachchi, Yingbo Li, Robert Lund, Jarred Rennie,  Homogenization of Daily Temperature Data, Journal of Climate 2017, Vol 30, Iss3, pp 985-999. Presidential Awards for Scientific Publication ceremony organized by the National Research Council was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo 26th of August 2019. The awards are given to each of the top 100 papers published in journals with the highest SCImago Journal Ranking extracted from the Scopus database, by Sri Lankan Scientists with Sri Lankan institutional affiliation.  The President presented awards to over 200 chosen scientists for their publications in medicine, agriculture, Science, and engineering fields for the year 2017.

“Vidu Tharani”, the community project organized by the Department of Statistics & Computer Science with the collaboration of Statistics & Computer Science Students Association was successfully held on 26th August 2019 at CP/W/Araththana Junior School in Madulkele.

This was conducted as the second stage of the Vidu Tharani project which was carried out in 2018. Under this project, the school computer laboratory was renovated and equipped with 13 new computers which included the necessary hardware and software. This was ceremoniously handed over to the students. The primary section was colour washed and cleaned by the department staff and undergraduates.

This event was held under the guidance of Prof. D. M. Semasinghe, Vice-Chancellor of the University and the project was sponsored by the Centre for Brand Image Development at the University of Kelaniya. The computers were donated by LOLC Technologies Pvt. Ltd with the mediation of Mr. Thisan Samarawickrama. Academic, non-academic Staff members and the students of the Department of Statistics & Computer Science participated for the event.

A group of third year statistics students of Department of Statistics & Computer Science, Faculty of science, University of Kelaniya visited MAS KREEDA Intimo (pvt) ltd, Biyagama on 04th of July 2019. The primary objective of this visit was to get familiar with the industry and its working procedure as well as the experience the real world applications of Statistics. The participants received a vast knowledge about the production process, the way of applying statistical quality control techniques in production process, the Six Sigma concept and also the carrier opportunities in MAS KREEDA Intimo (pvt) ltd. The industrial visit provided an insight on how companies work and also useful information related to the practical aspects of the courses which cannot be visualized in lectures.

 The industrial visit was organized under the guidance of Dr. (Mrs.) A. P. Hewaarachchi, Senior Lecturer, Department of Statistics & Computer science, University of Kelaniya, with the support of Mr. Chamal Mihiranga Devasinghe, Head of the Department – Lean Enterprises, MAS KREEDA Intimo (pvt) ltd.

A session in which Senate Awards and monetary prizes were presented to appreciate the researches in the University of Kelaniya was held on 27th June 2019 at the Senate room of the university and Dr. N. V. Chandrasekara of Department of Statistics & Computer Science was appreciated with Senate awards for conducting high quality research and publishing in internationally recognized indexed journals in the year 2018.
