Bachelor of Science Honours in Applied Chemistry

After completing your Advanced Level Examination, we know that you are looking for an opportunity that would help you to build your future. Since your whole life depends on the decision that you take at this moment, it should be a wise decision that you take, carefully considering many aspects. We, the Department of Chemistry are willing to help you with this by providing a new four year Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Applied Chemistry, which will be commencing from the year 2022 (for students who sat for the 2020 G.C.E. A/L examination). The Department also offer two subjects, namely chemistry and biochemistry for the normal intake.
Significance of the program:
- You will be provided with a knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry and its applications in industry. Basic knowledge in concepts in chemical engineering, skills in analytical techniques used in laboratories, advanced knowledge in industrial related areas of chemistry, which diversify the undergraduate degree program in relation to the national and global needs, are included in the curricula of this programme.
- Enrolling in this degree programme would encourage you to engage in independent learning and to improve technical and soft skills such as; personality, communication, information technology, problem solving, team work and management skills, that are required by both scientific and non-scientific employers.
- This degree programme would help you to demonstrate interest and enthusiasm in conducting scientific investigations and also shape you up to integrate into and work in any culture.
- Most importantly, you will gain the ability to work in chemistry related industries and institutions and contribute to the growth of the Chemical industry through innovations.
Eligibility requirement (Entry Qualifications)
In order to be eligible to get enrolled in this programme you should have followed,
Chemistry
Physics
Biology / Combined mathematics or any other science subject for the G.C.E. A/L examination.
Program duration
4 academic years.
Language:
The medium of instruction is English.

- Industrial and Environmental applications of chemistry related to Sri Lanka
- Skills in data handling and basic Statistics
- Laboratory skills including laboratory safety, quality management & quality assurance
- Basic electronics

- Scientific Communication skills
- Research/ Industrial training
- The bulk of the courses will be offered by the Department of Chemistry.
- Departments of Physics & Electronics, Microbiology, Statistics & Computer Science, Industrial Management and Zoology & Environmental Management, together with the Department of English Language Teaching will provide courses too.

How is this course taught?
It includes lectures, seminars, tutorials, quizzes, online assignments, laboratory work, case studies and field studies and are based on student centered learning method. Active participation of you for the class room discussions and presentations is expected. E-learning to facilitate the teaching and learning process will be implemented and you are encouraged to talk to instructors at any time for further clarification of lecture and laboratory materials.
Who will teach and guide you:
The Department has a very strong and qualified permanent academic staff who are all holding PhD degrees from renowned American or European Universities. They are specialized in a variety of disciplines in Chemistry and are well trained to carryout teaching and research oriented activities in Chemistry and related fields. A group of skilled, temporary academic staff members and laboratory technicians will assist the teaching in laboratory courses.
Resources:
The Department has several lecture rooms, 10 laboratories, an instrument laboratory, a spectroscopy room, administrative office complex, rooms for lecturers and technical staff, chemical storage facilities, a bioassay room, a green house, computer laboratory and library room. The Department also takes care of the glassblowing unit which involves in fabrication and repair of scientific glass apparatus. Most of the basic as well as state of the art instruments that are required for university chemistry teaching and fundamental research are found in the Department instrument and research laboratories.
Career opportunities:
Most graduates with a Bachelor’s degree secure employment in the private or government sector. However the objective of this programme is to enhance the knowledge and skills required, in this employees so that they will easily blend in to the governmental and commercial institutions and become better chemists, analysts, technicians, statisticians, scientists or entrepreneurs, etc…
Higher education opportunities:
Most of the honors degree students secure placements in foreign universities, mainly in the USA, for their post graduate studies. Students that follow this programme would have the same opportunity.
