Organized by the Industrial Management Science Students’ Association, hackX 2023, the 8th edition of the Inter-university Start-up Challenge, was a resounding success, drawing 800 contestants from 21 universities, forming 190 teams. The Grand Finals of hackX 8.0 took place on November 5th at Dialog Axiata's Ideamart Auditorium and showcased 15 outstanding teams. The winning teams are as follows:

 

Champions: Team ChiMeRa - University of Colombo

1st Runners-up: Team Annihilators - University of Colombo

2nd Runners-up: Team Idealabs - University of Jayawardenepura

 

Most Popular Team: Team Idea Pioneer - University of Kelaniya

 

hackX 8.0 served as a vibrant platform for innovation while also fostering collaboration between industry experts and undergraduates. The event further encouraged the creation of startups among undergraduates, thus, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka's startup landscape.

Abishaa Rubanathan, a fourth-year student of the Department of Industrial Management in University of Kelaniya, received the Gold Award at the 25th National ICT Awards NBQSA 2023 which took place on the 25th of October 2023. Her project, 'Cubic - A Mobile-Based Platform for the Sri Lankan School Transport System,' was aimed at improving school children's safety. The event was organized by BCS - The Chartered Institute for IT, and Abishaa participated in the Tertiary Student Business Category, where the most outstanding project undertaken by a tertiary (undergraduate) student, or a group of students was honored. Her project was supervised by Dr. Amila Withanaarachchi, senior lecturer of the Department of Industrial Management in University of Kelaniya, and she received the award from President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Abishaa's achievement demonstrates her innovative approach and commitment to addressing real-world challenges through technology.

 We are thrilled to announce the outstanding achievement of the winners from the Department of Industrial Management who won the Code Blast National Hackathon which took place on the 30th of September, 2023. This hackathon has been a showcase of incredible talent and innovation, as participants from across the nation have come together to address real-world challenges. After intense competition and rigorous evaluations, Team Denkers of the Department of Industrial Management in University of Kelaniya, won the competition. Chamil Yahampath (Leader), Sonal Paranawithana, Pathum Lakruwan, Vishath Amarasinghe and Thamindu Premaratne from Level Two have represented the victorious Team Denkers.  

We extend our warmest congratulations to Team Denkers who have exhibited exceptional creativity and problem-solving skills while making remarkable contributions to the field of technology.

The Department of Industrial Management hosted the 9th Invention Convention for Engineering Smart Systems for Industry (InCo 2023) on the 20th of September. This remarkable event showcased the creativity, innovation, and talent of our future industrial management experts. 

InCo 2023 was divided into two exciting sessions:

  1. Exhibition (10.30 am - 4 pm): This session provided a platform for 8 teams to display their innovative projects and inventions to a diverse audience. 

 

  1. Award Ceremony (4 pm onwards): As the highlight of InCo 2023, this ceremony celebrated the hard work and dedication of our participants. External judges, including industry experts, played a crucial role in evaluating the projects and selecting the winners.

 

A total of 7 awards were presented to acknowledge excellence in innovation, marketing campaign design, and overall performance. The winners of InCo 2023 were as follows:

First Runners-up: Team Alpha

Second Runners-up: Team Blacklisted

 

Marketing Campaign Design Category:

Winner: Team Alpha

Crowned as the overall champions of InCo 2023, Team Alpha showcased exceptional skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

 

The winners were presented with certificates in recognition of their outstanding achievements and commitment in pushing the boundaries of innovation. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and participants for their remarkable efforts and look forward to witnessing their future contributions to the industry.

A workshop for the students of Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda was conducted by the Department of Industrial Management in University of Kelaniya. The workshop was held at the university premises on the 4th day of September, from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The participants comprised students ranging from grades 8 to 13, who are members of the school’s IoT club. 

The primary objectives of this workshop encompassed the introduction of the Arduino software to the participants and the stimulation of an interest in Information Technology among female students, as the representation of women in this sector remains notably scarce.

The IT Department of the National Institute of Education also participated in the workshop. The overall outcome of the IoT workshop proved to be highly successful, and the students derived considerable enjoyment from the event.
