The day began with a Guest Session by 𝗠𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗟𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆. With her strong background in marketing, branding, and digital media, Ms. Thareendra shared valuable insights on building a personal brand and developing a professional image. She emphasized 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. Drawing from her experiences in both the corporate and non-profit sectors, she encouraged students to focus on self-presentation, confidence, and networking, helping them understand how to make a lasting impact in their respective fields.
Following this, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗞. 𝗥. 𝗡. 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶, 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗦𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗮 and Senior Lecturer in Library & Information Science, along with 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗮 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗦𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗮, conducted a session on mental well-being. Their discussion focused on the 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.
The final session of the day was conducted by Temporary Lecturers Dinithi and Rupeshika, focusing on 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀. This interactive session helped students develop confidence, clarity, and engagement in delivering effective presentations. They covered essential techniques such as 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, ensuring that students are well-prepared to communicate their ideas persuasively in academic and professional settings.
With each session, students gained not only knowledge but also a deeper sense of confidence and belonging within the department. The ninth day was yet another step towards building a well-rounded, capable, and prepared student body.
Day 8 of the Department of Industrial Management’s orientation program was another exciting step in preparing students for their academic journey. The sessions covered a range of important topics, from communication skills to sports facilities, alumni insights, and reflections on the program.
The day began with a session by our department lecturer Ms. Yehemini Jayatissa, where students engaged in discussions and activities focused on internship opportunities and career pathways. She provided valuable insights into the importance of gaining practical experience during university life, highlighting how internships help to merge academic learning and real-world applications. Students learned about how to secure internships, build professional networks, and develop industry-relevant skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for future career opportunities.
The next session was conducted by Temporary Lecturers Dinithi and Rupeshika about Communication Enhancement. This session helped students develop clarity, confidence, and effectiveness in communication, essential for academic and professional success.
The special highlight of the morning was an Introduction to Sports Facilities done by Mr. Sameera Wijayagunaratne, Instructor in Physical Education, where students learned about the various sports and recreational opportunities available at the university. This session encouraged them to explore extracurricular activities that promote both physical well-being and teamwork.
Following this, Mr. Chamath Ranaweera, Software Engineer at Swivel Tech, IM Alumini, shared his experiences and insights, offering students valuable guidance on how to make the most of their university journey. His session focused on how sports and extracurricular activities played a crucial role in shaping his life and professional career. He emphasized that while academic excellence is important, active participation in sports and student organizations helps develop essential life skills such as leadership, teamwork, discipline, and resilience.
The following session by Senior Lecturers, Dr. Ruwan Wickramarachchi and Dr. Dilani Wickramarachchi, who spoke about Dos and Don’ts in University Life. Their session went beyond just academic advice—it was an inspiring discussion about crafting a vision for life and setting meaningful goals for the future.
The afternoon continued with student presentations, where the freshers had the opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences from the orientation program. This session was not only a platform for reflection but also a heartfelt moment where students expressed their gratitude to the faculty, organizers, and senior students who guided them throughout the program.
As the sun rose on the seventh day of orientation, students at the Department of Industrial Management gathered once again, eager to gain new lessons and experiences. The day promised a mix of inspiration, awareness, and skill-building, and it did not disappoint.
The morning kicked off with a powerful reality check. Dr. Manuja N. Perera, a Senior Lecturer in Public Health, addressed the students on Drug Awareness. Her talk was not just informative but deeply impactful, as she detailed the physical, mental, and social consequences of substance abuse. It was a session that encouraged students to think critically about their choices and reinforced the importance of a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
The next session was conducted by Temporary Lecturers Ms. Dinithi and Ms. Rupeshika about Communication Enhancement. Whether it was pronunciation practice, non-verbal communication, or research basics, students actively participated in exercises designed to refine their communication skills. They left the session with a newfound awareness of how words, tone, and body language can shape effective communication.
Following this, Dr. Ruwan Wickramarachchi, Senior Lecturer, conducted a 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗧 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘀. From online learning platforms and research databases to software access and IT support services, he emphasized how technology can enhance both academic and extracurricular activities.
The final session of the day took a session with IM Alumi, where the graduate students of Department of Industrial Management took the stage, sharing their university journeys the highs, the lows, and the valuable lessons in between. They spoke about their academic struggles, friendships, and professional paths, offering guidance to freshers who are just beginning their own journeys. Their stories weren’t just advice; they were roadmaps filled with insights and encouragement.
With each passing day, orientation continues to mold these students into confident individuals, ready to take on the challenges of university life and beyond.
Day Six of the orientation program at the Department of Industrial Management was an exciting showcase of growth, empowerment, and connection. Designed to equip students with the tools and mindset to excel in university life, the sessions of the day brought invaluable insights and opportunities for personal and academic growth.
The day began with an engaging session on Presentation Skills conducted by Professor Suren Peter, Senior Lecturer, Department of Industrial Management, shared tips and techniques to help students speak confidently, engage their audience, and deliver effective presentations. The session was both practical and inspiring, giving students the tools to communicate their ideas clearly and powerfully.
Next, Dr. Amila Withanarachchi, Senior Lecturer, Department of Industrial Management led a session on “How to Spend University Life Productively.” He spoke about the importance of time management, setting goals, and balancing studies with personal growth. His advice encouraged students to make the most of their time at university and turn it into a period of learning and self-discovery.
In the final part of the day, students were introduced to the university’s clubs and including Leo Club, Rotract club, LED club, AIESEC and VidE Club. A group of third-year students shared their experiences of being part of various clubs, highlighting how joining a club can help develop skills, build friendships, and create lasting memories. They encouraged the first-year students to get involved and make the most of these opportunities.
The day reflected the department’s commitment to supporting its students, not just academically but in all aspects of their university life. With each session, students gained valuable insights and felt more prepared to start their academic journey with confidence.
