Introduction

This programme is designed for graduates desiring to enhance their competencies when pursuing a career in information technology and for those graduates in other functional areas desiring to use information technology to enhance their ability to provide effective and efficient solutions to their stakeholders.


Programme Objectives

  • Developing high quality IT professionals to meet the growing demand in the IT industry
  • Upgrading the professionals who are already in the software industry with the basic knowledge and skills in machine learning and analytics
  • Enabling non-computing graduates to secure a career in the IT industry


Programme Outcomes

On successful completion of the programme, the candidates are converted to IT professionals who are able to:
  • write high-quality, efficient and effective software code
  • contribute effectively as a member of a software development team
  • accept responsibilities in non-development careers in IT such as database administration, network and systems administration, UI/UX designing, graphic designing, data analysis, etc.
  • identify problems in the environment and propose effective solutions using emerging information and communication technologies
  • passionately continue self-study on more focused and advanced disciplines of IT
  • start a freelancing career in software development

Duration:
18 months (The duration may vary due to unexpected interruptions)


Entry Qualifications

Any bachelor’s degree or equivalent acceptable to the Senate of the University of Kelaniya. Applications of those who have diplomas/higher diplomas from recognized institutions will be considered based on their experience and other professional qualifications obtained.


Application Procedure
  • All candidates who wish to follow the Master of IT degree programme will be initially registered for the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGD IT) programme (currently being offered) based on the aforementioned entry qualifications. Those who successfully complete the graduation requirements of the PGD IT upgrade their registration to the Master of Information Technology (MIT) programme.
  • Application can be submitted online through fgs.kln.ac.lk or collected from the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya
  • Application fee of Rs. 1000/- can be paid to any branch of People’s Bank to the credit of Account No: 055-1-001-1-0667549, People’s Bank, Kelaniya Branch.
  • Perfected applications should be forwarded to Senior Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, Kelaniya along with the certified copies of the following documents and the customer’s copy of the paying-in voucher.
    • Certificates of educational and professional qualifications
    • Letters in proof of work experience
    • Birth certificate
    • Identity card/passport
    • Other relevant documents (if any)
 
 
Note: Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic situation, submission of the certified copies of the documents could be done when the curfew and lockdown measures are lifted. Payment could be done through the online payment gateway of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.


Course Fee

The total course fee for the Master of Information Technology would be Rs. 175,000/-, which could be paid in three instalments with an initial upfront fee of Rs. 50,000 at registration. Additionally, a one-time fee of Rs. 10,500 would be applicable as registration, library, examination and ICT fees. A refundable deposit of Rs. 5000/-, will be charged for use of the university library.
Installment 2: Rs. 50,000/- after six months of the registration
Installment 3: Rs. 75,000/- when upgrading to the Master of IT programme
 

Graduation requirements of the PGD IT programme (The requirement need to be fulfilled for the upgrade to the Master of IT)
 
A candidate is eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology if he/she
  • obtains grades of B- or better in course units aggregating to a minimum of twenty-five (25) credits
  • achieves a minimum GPA of 2.7
 
AND
  • completes the relevant requirements within a period of three consecutive academic years
 

Repeat/Makeup Examinations

A candidate may re-sit a course where he/she has obtained less than a “B-” grade pass. However, the maximum grade that could result from a re-sit is a grade of “B-”. Maximum number of attempts allowed to re-sit any course unit will be two.
 

Graduation Requirements of the Master of IT Programme

The following criteria applies for the award of the Master of Information Technology degree.
 
 
Pass
 
A candidate is eligible for the Master of IT if he/she
 
  1. obtains grades of B- or better in course units aggregating to a minimum of 32 credits inclusive of all Compulsory course units.
  2. achieves a minimum GPA of 2.70
                     
AND
 
  • completes the relevant requirements within a period of three academic years.
 

Merit Pass
 
A candidate shall be awarded a Merit Pass provided he/she
  1. obtains grades of B+ or better in all course units aggregating to a minimum of 32 credits inclusive of all Compulsory course units.
  2. achieves a minimum GPA of 3.70
  • Obtain grades of A or better in course units aggregating to at least 50% of total credits for the course units considered for awarding the MIT
                AND
  1. completes the relevant requirements in the first attempt.
 

Distinction Pass
 
A candidate shall be awarded a Distinction Pass provided he/she
  1. obtains grades of A or better in course units aggregating to a minimum of 32 credits inclusive of all Compulsory course units.
  2. achieves a minimum GPA of 4.00
                AND
  • completes the relevant requirements in the first attempt
 

A candidate should apply for the award of the Master of Information Technology (MIT) degree on satisfying the above requirements. On completion of the MIT degree, a candidate is entitled to an official transcript giving the grades in the respective course units after the confirmation of the results by the University Senate.


Exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in IT

Candidates will be selected to follow the Master of IT degree programme from those who are qualified for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology. Thus, the candidates following the Masters of IT programme have the option of exiting with the Postgraduate Diploma in IT in the event of any inability to complete the Master of IT. Such candidates will have to apply for an exit with the Postgraduate Diploma in IT. In such a case, the graduation criteria of the Postgraduate Diploma in IT will be applied.
