05 January 2017: The President’s Awards for Scientific Publications in 2014 was held on 22 November 2016 under the patronage of His Excellency the President, the Honourable Minister of Science, Technology and Research and the Honourable State Minister of Science, Technology and Research.

Vidya Nidhi Professor Emeritus W P Siripala and Dr K M D C Jayathilaka from the Department of Physics were awarded the President’s Awards for Scientific Publications in 2014.

06 January 2015: Services/achievements of the following members of the Department of Physics were appreciated at the Annual Awards Ceremony of the University of the Kelaniya, held on January 01, 2014.
  1. Vidya Nidhi Professor W P SiripalaProfessor L B D R P Wijesundera and Prof P S Hewageegana were awarded medals for bringing honour to the University of Kelaniya by winning prestigious national awards in 2014.
  2. Professor J R P Jayakody was awarded a Gold Medal and a Certificate of Appreciation for thirty five years of dedicated service rendered to the University of Kelaniya.
  3. Prof P S Hewageegana won the award for the "The Most Outstanding Researcher in the Faculty of Science 2014".
  4. Mr.  K M D C Jayathilaka won the award for the "The Most Outstanding Young Researcher in the Faculty of Science 2014".
  5. Mr. M R L J B Nawarathana and Mr. H H G Premarathna were awarded a Letter In Appreciation for dedicated service provided to the University during the year 2014.

20 November 2014: Dr P S Hewageegana has been promoted to the post of Professor in the Department of Physics with effect from 27 May 2013.

17 Octobet 2014: Prof. H H Sumathipala has been awarded a memento and a medal as by president of Sri Lanka on 13 October 2014, an appreciation of the service made to the country being a past student of a central college, at the commemoration of 130th birthday of  C.W.W. Kannangara.

23 Aug 2010: Digital Dreams 2010 competition was held at University of Kelaniya on 23 August by Department of Physics, University of Kelaniya, to demonstrate the talents of young undergraduate students who are following courses in the Electronic stream. 14 Sep 2009: Dr (Mrs) W J M Samaranayaka has been awarded the IOP-PPCF Prize for Best Poster for experimental and numerical work on the investigation of ozone production in a plasma discharge for environmental and medical applications by a young researcher in connection with the 2009 Summer College on Plasma Physics held at the ICTP from 10 to 28 August 2009.

16 Feb 2009: Professor Emeritus C Dahanayake (Founder Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Founder Head and Professor of Physics of the Department of Physics) has passed away on 14 February 2009 (appreciation in English and Sinhala).

15 Jan 2009: Mr P S Hewageegana has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy on 15 December 2008 from Georgia State University, USA.

05 May 2007: Prize awarding ceremony for the Science Fiction Competition, organized by the Physics Students’ Society of the University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the Department of Physics and the Ministry of Education, to commemorate the World Year of Physics, 2005 was held on 3 May 2007. Hon. Minister of Education Mr. Susil Premajayantha attended the occasion as the chief guest.

19 Jan 2007: Vidya Nidhi Professor W P Siripala delivered a special lecture titled "NANOTECHNOLOGY: THE KEY TECHNOLOGY OF THE 21ST CENTURY" on 18 January 2007. This lecture was organized by the Physics Students' Society of the University of Kelaniya
