Prof. V.P.A. Weerasinghe of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, University of Kelaniya, has been awarded a prestigious research grant under the National Agricultural Research Plan (NARP) of Sri Lanka – 2025, funded through the Research Projects for the National University System.

The funded project, titled “Effect of Climate Change on Export-Oriented Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Diversity, Production, Value Addition, and Marketing in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka with Spatiotemporal Mapping of Existing Climate-Resilient Mango Varieties”, holds significant national importance. It aims to explore and examine the export potential of climate-resilient mango varieties as value-added products by analyzing market potential history over the past 25 years using regression analysis and land suitability analysis for the selected varieties in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka. This will help to make recommendations to optimize net economic benefits for conservation and promotion of mangoes of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Council for Agricultural Research Policy (SLCARP) has approved a grant of Rs 4.945 million, to be utilized over a period of two years for the implemention of this project

On the 23rd of November 2023, an initial discussion regarding signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, and the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute, Thailand, was held at the Boardroom of the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya.

 

The participants included four delegates from Thailand: Mr. Kittipan Kanjanapipatkul, the International Affairs Advisor of the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute; Professor Dr. Prasat Kittakoop, a Faculty Member of the Chemical Biology Program at the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute; Mrs. Sureerat Potipim, a Development Cooperation Officer at the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA); and Ms. Peeranan Booranasophone, the Head of the Academic Support Division of the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute.

 

In addition to the Thai delegation, key representatives from the University of Kelaniya were present, including the Dean of the Faculty of Science, the Head of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, and the academic and non-academic staff members of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management.

The ceremonial opening of the Prof. H.H. Costa Memorial Laboratory of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management was held on 11th April 2019.

The ceremony was graced by Prof. D.M. Semasinghe, The Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Prof. B.M. Jayawardena, The Dean, Faculty of Science, Heads of Departments and the academic staff members of the Faculty of Science. Also family members of Prof. H. H. Costa were present at the ceremony.

Prof. H. H. Costa was the founder professor of the Department of Zoology and has contributed immensely to the betterment of the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science and the University of Kelaniya.  He has served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya from 1994 to 1997.

As an honour to the services rendered by Prof. H. H. Costa, the main teaching laboratory of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management was named as the Prof. H.H. Costa Memorial Laboratory.
