DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

The Department of Zoology and Environmental Management contributes to four Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programmes, viz BSc degree programme, BSc Honours degree programme in Zoology,  BSc degree programme in Environmental Conservation and Management & BSc Honours degree programme in Environmental Conservation and Management. Department also offers Masters degree and Master of Science (MSc) degree programme in Environmental Management & Master of Science (MSc) degree programme in Aquaculture and Fisheries Management. Facilities are also available for M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes in specific areas in Zoology and Environmental conservation and Management. The Department has  experienced academic staff and adequate facilities to cater to the needs of the country in the 21st century

Senior Professor R.K.S. Dias and Team Win Prestigious NSF Award for Research Excellence

Senior Professor R.K.S. Dias of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, University of Kelaniya, and her team have been awarded the prestigious “Award for Research Excellence” by the National Science Foundation (NSF) of Sri Lanka. The award was presented on 16th July 2025 in recognition of their outstanding research project titled “Immunochemical characterization of Hymenopteran (Apis dorsata and Vespa affinis) insect venom and its cross reactivity with venom from European species”.

 

The department extends its heartfelt congratulations to Professor Dias and her team for this remarkable achievement. 

APN Research Grant Awarded to Dr. B.G.N. Sewwandi, Dr. L. Manage, and Prof. L.D. Amarasinghe

Dr. B.G.N. Sewwandi, Dr. L. Manage, and Prof. L.D. Amarasinghe of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, University of Kelaniya, have been awarded a prestigious research grant by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) for their research project titled “Urban Ecosystem-Based Adaptations for Climate Resilience: A Comparative Study of Policy, Practice, and Capacity Building in Sri Lanka, India, and Pakistan”. The research team comprises several other researchers from Sri Lanka, India, and Pakistan and lead by Dr. B.G.N. Sewwandi.
 
This project received conditional approval during the 58th Steering Committee Meeting of the APN, held in Kobe, Japan, on June 30, 2025.
 
The Department warmly congratulates the research team on this significant achievement and wishes them continued success in their research endeavors.

Prestigious NARP Research Grant Awarded to Prof. V.P.A. Weerasinghe

Prof. V.P.A. Weerasinghe of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, University of Kelaniya, has been awarded a prestigious research grant under the National Agricultural Research Plan (NARP) of Sri Lanka – 2025, funded through the Research Projects for the National University System.
 
The funded project, titled “Effect of Climate Change on Export-Oriented Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Diversity, Production, Value Addition, and Marketing in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka with Spatiotemporal Mapping of Existing Climate-Resilient Mango Varieties”, holds significant national importance. It aims to explore and examine the export potential of climate-resilient mango varieties as value-added products by analyzing market potential history over the past 25 years using regression analysis and land suitability analysis for the selected varieties in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka. This will help to make recommendations to optimize net economic benefits for conservation and promotion of mangoes of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Council for Agricultural Research Policy (SLCARP) has approved a grant of Rs 4.945 million, to be utilized over a period of two years for the implemention of this project.
