Guest lecture on Shifting the paradigm from drug therapy to RNA therapy

A special guest lecture organized by the Zoology Society of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, University of kelaniya was held on the 4th of July, 2016 at the Board Room, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya. Professor Preethi Gunaratne from the Department of Biology and Biochemistry, University of Houston conducted the lecture on “Shifting the paradigm from drug therapy to RNA therapy”. Professor Gunaratne holds dual appointments in Human Genome Sequencing Center and Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA. She has served as the Director of gene sequencing at the Baylor-Human Genome Sequencing Center and has directly contributed to the sequencing of human chromosome 3, 12 and X. In the University of Houston she investigates the role of non-coding genome and its role in biology and diseases with special emphasis on micro RNA and micro RNA-regulated genes. Her lecture was very well attended by participants from University of Kelaniya and other universities. After the lecture Prof. Gunaratne conducted an interactive discussion with undergraduates on prospective post graduate opportunities and getting prepared for postgraduate training overseas. The senior treasurer of the Zoology Society, Dr. Gayani Rajapaksa invited the guest speaker for the event.
