Mr. Hashan Peiris from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Canada, delivered an insightful and engaging session on January 7th, 2025, at the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya. His expertise, passion, and the valuable time he dedicated to sharing his knowledge provided us with a deeper understanding of the landscape of higher education and the various exciting career paths available for mathematics and statistics majors.

During his session, we explored key topics that will undoubtedly help our students navigate the exciting opportunities that await them after their BSc. The Mathematics Students' Society of the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, organized the much-awaited inter-faculty mathematics quiz competition, Paramount-4.0, marking the 4th consecutive year of this intellectual challenge. The competition brought together student teams from all faculties of the university, highlighting the spirit of friendly academic competition and collaboration.

The event kicked off with the first round on November 29, 2024, where multiple teams competed for a spot in the intermediate round. After a series of intense rounds, ten teams were selected to advance to the next stage. The intermediate round, along with the final round, took place on December 8, 2024.

The final day of the competition was graced by two distinguished guest speakers: Mr. Sidantha Karunaratne, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Continental Insurance Ltd., and Prof. N.C. Ganegoda, Professor at the Department of Mathematics, University of Sri Jayawardenapura. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to both of them in advance for their time, effort, and presence at the event. Their support was greatly appreciated, and we look forward to future collaborations with them.

The event also saw the participation of senior lecturers and academic members of the university, who played a crucial role as judges during the competition. Their support and guidance ensured the smooth and fair conduct of the event, reflecting the commitment of the university’s academic community to fostering excellence in mathematics.

The competition culminated in a series of exciting rounds, with five teams reaching the final. After intense rounds of challenging questions, the winners were determined, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to them for their outstanding achievements. Their dedication and teamwork were truly commendable.

We also wish to express our best wishes to all the participants for their future academic endeavors. This event was a testament to the academic excellence and enthusiasm that thrives within the university, and we look forward to hosting Paramount-5.0 next year.
Thank you to everyone involved for making Paramount-4.0 a resounding success.

Dr. Edgar Santos-Fernandez obtained his PhD in Statistics, in 2017 from the Massey University - New Zealand. He is currently Senior Research Fellow as well as a Lecturer in Data Science at Queensland University of Technology, Australia. His research focuses on statistics, applied statistics, Bayesian modelling, data science, challenging data, and data analysis. He has published a significant number of research papers (around 20) in the area of applied statistics, and He is the author of the book “Multivariate Statistical Quality Control Using R” which was published in Springer Briefs in Statistics.

On the third day of the Mathematics Department’s Research Lecture Series, we had the privilege of hosting Dr. Mihiri De Silva, a distinguished lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Kelaniya. Dr. De Silva holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and a Ph.D. from Texas Tech University, with research interests spanning Mathematical Biology, Dynamical Systems, and Differential Equations. In this engaging session, Dr. De Silva shared her expertise on the important skill of "Grant Writing." She discussed strategies for writing successful research proposals, securing funding, and her experiences navigating the world of academic grants.
We are grateful to Dr. Mihiri De Silva for her valuable insights and look forward to more enriching sessions in the lecture series.
