A one-day workshop was held at the National Engineering Research and Development (NERD) Center on the 24th of October 2024 as a key component of the Industry & Technology course, aiming to provide first-year students with an immersive experience in the practical applications of technological innovations

This workshop, organized by the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, forged a step towards bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications by focusing on key areas such as technology transfer and commercialization, sustainable development, and hands-on demonstrations of cutting-edge technologies. Students gained insights into how the 3Ps of the industry works when it comes to practical real-time scenarios: people, process, product, gaining further insights into how innovations move from research labs to market-ready solutions, the role of technology in addressing environmental challenges, and the practical applications of research outcomes in industrial settings.

Impact and Feedback

This workshop provided a unique platform for students to witness the critical role of research and development in driving technological progression, especially in the context of SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises). The exposure aligned seamlessly with the department's mission to cultivate future leaders equipped to innovate and contribute to Sri Lanka's industrial and technological advancement.

Participants shared positive feedback, emphasizing the value of seeing theory come to life through practical demonstrations and expert insights. Many students were inspired to think critically about how they could apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems and contribute to sustainable development.
