System for Industry Automation and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Based on Controller Area Network (CAN) Protocol

System for Industry Automation and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Based on Controller Area Network (CAN) Protocol

This invention disclosed a wired, long distance, addressable, reliable, and bidirectional data communication system based on Controller Area Network (CAN) communication protocol to monitor, control, and visualise real-time data on a local or remote dashboard. Furthermore, this system can replace the existing IoT-based communication systems, by eliminating distortions due to interference in the industrial environment and current technical problems such as discontinuation in communication during an Internet failure. With this system, end devices or pieces of machinery can manipulate the communication process and initiate communication without depending on a master device. Due to those unique features, this invented system can overcome reliability issues and real-time controlling and monitoring issues in the existing systems. Furthermore, the true bidirectional communication design of the invention facilitates real-time and uninterrupted simultaneous handling of input devices (Sensor Devices/Input pieces of machinery) and output devices (Controller Devices/Output pieces of machinery) without the need for a separate controlling system. Especially this system is highly customisable, and the connected devices can be controlled through a local or remote dashboard by assigning custom commands. Internet connection is optional for the invented system. A single device consisting of this invented data communication system can be used for industrial automation, IIoT and IoT purposes.

This invention has gained the interest of one of the leading Sri Lankan IT companies, “Infosoft Lanka (Pvt) Ltd” and upon their requirement a smart telecommunication tower management system was designed using the developed IIoT system architecture. The commercial partner, “Infosoft Lanka (Pvt) Ltd” satisfied with the proof-of-concept prototype and initial testing was done in the field. For technology transfer, the signing of the License Agreement between the University of Kelaniya & Infosoft Lanka Pvt Ltd was took place cer0monialy on 9th of March 2023 at the University of Kelaniya. IP right is protected under SL Patent Application No. 22424
