The Unit of Sports and Exercise Science became the 10th academic unit/dept. of the Faculty of Science (FoS) in 2022. The Unit offers the Bachelor of Science Honours
Degree in Sports Science, a comprehensive academic programme designed to develop graduates with a strong foundation in sports science. The degree equips students with
the knowledge, practical skills, and professional mindset required for successful careers in sports science and related disciplines. By integrating scientific theory with
practical application, the programme covers key areas such as biomechanics, exercise physiology, sports and exercise psychology, and training science. The well-structured
curriculum includes internships and field-based learning opportunities, enabling students to gain hands-on experience, critical thinking skills, and research
competencies. Graduates are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to sports performance, health, and wellness.
The B.Sc. Honours Degree in Sports Science admits approximately 50 students annually through a competitive selection process. Student admission is based on an
aptitude test consisting of two components: (i) a practical test to assess physical fitness and readiness, and (ii) an evaluation of sports achievements. Candidates are
selected according to their performance in the aptitude test, programme preference, and the results of the G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) Examination of the respective
year. This rigorous selection process ensures the enrolment of highly talented students with outstanding knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Many students currently enrolled in
the programme are national and international-level athletes who have brought distinction to the Unit, Faculty, and University through their achievements in
prestigious sporting events.
To support students from diverse academic backgrounds, the programme includes a six-week foundation module designed to strengthen fundamental scientific knowledge
and essential skills. This module facilitates a smooth transition into the degree programme and provides opportunities for students who may not have prior academic
exposure to sports science.
Graduates of the B.Sc. Honours Degree in Sports Science are equipped for careers in sports coaching, performance analysis, health and fitness consultancy, sports event
management, and scientific research. They are also well-positioned to pursue postgraduate studies and professional development in related fields. As the demand
for sports science education continues to grow in Sri Lanka, this emerging discipline offers expanding opportunities both locally and internationally. The Unit is committed
to advancing sports science education by broadening its academic scope and contributing to the development of sports, health, and society in Sri Lanka.
