Bachelor of Science Honours in Sports Science

Objectives of the Bachelor of Science Honours in Sports Science (BSSS) Degree Programme:

Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya will offer this integrated sports science degree programme BSSS with the vision of producing quality graduates in Sports Science and allowing the candidates who have excelled in school sports to pursue their studies leading to a degree in sports science. Therefore, the main objective of this proposed degree programme is to produce skilful and responsible graduates with a sound knowledge of both theoretical and applied aspects of sports science, so that they will be competent in contributing to the development of national and international sports.

With the commencement of proposed degree programme in Sports Science, University of Kelaniya would be able to develop a High Performance Sports Analysis Centre (HPSAC) for sports in the future. This centre could provide multifunctional facilities such as training with high performance coaching and human motion analysis for elite national athletes and produce future champions for Sri Lanka.

The specific objectives of the proposed BSSS programme are;

  • to educate undergraduates in the fundamental human and mechanical science knowledge surrounding physical education, sports and health science together with the skills to put this knowledge into practice.
  • to guide undergraduates for them to gain an understanding of human anatomy and physiology, training and fitness, and biomechanics with theory and practical in coaching.
  • to provide an opportunity to acquire practical skills in applied sports science such as exercise science, sports nutrition, mental training, and performance analysis to suit their career objectives.
  • to produce future coaches who are able to enhance the competitive abilities of top athletes and provide instruction to both - amateurs and top-level athletes through studies of theory, technique and practice of sports science.
  • to produce expertise in the areas of competitive sports and lifelong sports participation.
  • to train undergraduates to pursue a carrier in coaching, fitness, physical education, sports management, athlete training and scientific evaluation of sports.

Graduate Profile: 

Produce Bachelor of Science Honours in Sports Science graduates with following competencies:

  1. Equip with knowledge, skills, attitudes and mind-set that will benefit their personal lives as well as carrier opportunity in the field of sports with the ability to create sports coaching plans and fitness training plans according to the individual requirement of a client.
  2. Qualify for positions such as sports coach, conditioning coach, trainer, exercise therapist, exercise scientist, sports researcher, sports consultant, physical training instructors, biomechanics analyst, coaching methodologist, sports nutritionist, rehab specialist, and sports promoter.
  3. Equip with abilities to design and implement an exercise routing for an individual’s specific situation and goals, such as obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, diabetes mellitus, asthma, cancer, physical disabilities and postural deformities.
  4. Equip with abilities to use their technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge to fill the performance gap in the field of sports between national and international level.
  5. Demonstrate resourcefulness for lifelong learning opportunities.
  6. Be recognized as certified professionals in global job market.
  7. Capable of working for themselves or begin their own personal sports industrial business.
