University of Kelaniya Hosts Paramount 5.0: A Celebration of Mathematical Excellence

The Mathematics Students’ Society of the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, successfully concluded Paramount 5.0, the fifth edition of its prestigious Inter-Faculty Mathematics Quiz Competition. This annual event continues to serve as a cornerstone for promoting mathematical talent and fostering intellectual engagement among university students.
The competition unfolded in three phases, beginning with the preliminary round on 17 October 2025 at the A7 Hall of the Faculty of Science. Teams representing multiple faculties participated enthusiastically, tackling a diverse range of mathematical challenges. Following this rigorous opening stage, the top ten teams advanced to the second round. The subsequent rounds and the awards ceremony were held on 26 October 2026, also at the A7 406 Hall.
The event was graced by two distinguished chief guests:
Dr. Chanakya J. Wijeratne, Senior Lecturer, Department of Mathematics, University of Colombo
Mr. Sandamal Ranatunga, Vice President of Group Sales Operations at Stretchline (Pvt) Ltd
Their presence added prestige to the occasion, and their insightful remarks highlighted the importance of mathematical thinking in today’s rapidly evolving world. They commended the dedication and intellectual rigor demonstrated by the participants.
The second round narrowed the field to five finalist teams, who then competed in a challenging final round. This stage showcased exceptional problem-solving skills, creativity, and composure under pressure. The dynamic format, including rapid-fire questions, kept the audience engaged and underscored the academic excellence of the contestants. Ultimately, the first, second, and third place teams were honored for their outstanding achievements.
The success of Paramount 5.0 reflects the collaborative efforts of the Mathematics Students’ Society, the Department of Mathematics, and the Faculty of Science. The event was supported by an experienced judging panel, dedicated volunteers, and generous sponsors, ensuring fairness and academic integrity throughout.
Paramount 5.0 reaffirmed that mathematics is not merely a subject but a way of thinking—an essential tool for innovation and problem-solving. The Mathematics Students’ Society looks forward to continuing this tradition, further strengthening the mathematical culture at the University of Kelaniya and inspiring future generations of thinkers and innovators.
