A virtual session on “why choosing honors degree in mathematics?” organized by the Mathematics Students’ Society in collaboration with Department of Mathematics was held successfully on 22nd June,2021 from 8.00 a.m. onwards and more than 135 participants were attended the event including students and academic staff members of the Department. The resource persons of the session were Dr. Upali Mampitiya, Senior Lecturer, Open University, Sri Lanka and Dr. Kumudu Mallawa Arachchi, Visiting Assistant Professor, Clarkson University, USA representing alumni of the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya.
The session mainly covered the following topics:
- Why choosing honors degree is important?
- Difference between general and honors degree program according to SLQF levels
- Career opportunities available for Mathematics Graduates
- Importance and benefits of higher education
- How and where to apply for higher study opportunities?
- Prerequisites when applying for a PhD in a foreign country and post graduate studies in USA.
The Q&A session was very interactive where students got the opportunity to clarify the doubts of students who are anticipating to apply for honors degree programs and postgraduate studies.
Dr. Sujeeva Wijesiri (Head, Department of Mathematics), the other academic staff members of the department and students from all four years(majority were from 2nd year) participated in this event.
