International training course on Sampling methods and identification of Ants

International training course on sampling methods and identification of ants was conducted for the fourth time by Prof. R.K. Sriyani Dias, (Co-ordinator, Principal Resource Person) Regional Centre for Ant Research, Department of Zoology and Environmental Management from 10 – 12 February, 2019. Dr. Aijaz A. Wachkoo from Jammu and Kashmir, India, Ms. H. A. W. S. Peiris and Mr. Sudesh Udayakantha served as other Resource Persons of the event. The field session, which provided hands – on experience in ant sampling methods was held at a private land in Katana on the 10th February. Laboratory sessions on the identification of ants and the certificate awarding to the participants were held at the Department of Zoology and Environmental Management during 11-12 February, 2019. Mr. Kanchaka Pathiraja, Mr. Sajith Premadasa and Ms. Hashini Jayakody, volunteered in the field session to make this event a success. A senior Lecturer at University Jaffna and thirteen young undergraduates from University of Ruhuna and University of Jaffna from Sri Lanka attended the training. The session on the awarding of certificates to the participants by Prof. Dias and Dr. Wachkoo was held from 5 – 6 p.m. on the 12th February. University of Kelaniya, as mentioned in its vision, funded this event.
