Team Tech Devs from Department of Industrial Management won the grand prize of FintecHack 2k17, the financial hackthon which was held on 11th of November at Kaffaine labs.  The Hackathon was organised by Nations Trust Bank collaboration with Faculty of IT - University of Moratuwa and Sri Lanka Association for Artificial Intelligence (SLAAI).

Team Tech Devs has developed an online android bidding application “BIDME”, as an innovative solution to auctions which are being conducted by banking sectors to sell out the pawned items which are overdue. This mobile application will provide the platform for commercial sector to create auctions, and to have the articles to be displayed visually, providing the application users to bid for the articles according to their preferences. Along with that the system will notify the users about the upcoming auctions too. The main objective of this system is to make the bank auctioning available to all the citizens who are interested in, and to develop good customer banking relationship whilst promoting their banking services.

There were more than 150 teams participated in the competition out of which only 16 teams were considered to be the finalists. Kalpa Wijesooriya (team leader), Gimhana Kaldera, Benuka Withanage and Vihanga Gayantha from Level 2 represented the victorious Team Tech Devs.

The Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics, of the Business Faculty, Monash University, Australia, awarded last year’s “Teaching Excellence Award-2018” for Teaching Associate to, Dr. Annista Wijayanayake, who is a member of the Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, currently on sabbatical leave. She received this award after having evaluated 34 applications based on peer review, feedback of students, and students teaching evaluation unit reports. Following the award she has been appointed as the Head of Teaching Associates on Operations Research courses which is another rewarding achievement within a year of service.

The Teaching award recognizes the contributions of an academic staff member in the area of teaching and learning which demonstrates, teaching that engage and inspire students to learn and achieve the desired objectives of a unit, supporting students in achieving positive learning outcomes, providing effective feedback, and a commitment to evaluate and improve teaching practices.

Through this award, the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics of Monash University presents an opportunity to their academic staff members to gain recognition in the department for the academic contributions in the area of teaching and learning. This award is also a reflection of the commitment of the department in promoting excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Expressing her ideas on this tremendous achievement, Dr. Wijayanayake stated that 18 years of her teaching experience at the Department of Industrial Management at Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, had an immense impact on her achievement. She wishes to extend her gratitude to the staff members and students for their continued support.

The department wishes to congratulate their prominent staff member Dr. Annista Wijayanayake on her international achievement which brings great pride and honour to the department. We wish her the very best for her future achievements.

The second consecutive workshop: “Teachers with MIT” was successfully held on 23rd of November, 2017 at the Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya. A selected group of 34 ICT teachers from the Kelaniya education zone participated for this workshop. The zonal education director and the zonal ICT director were the distinguished guests among them. The workshop basically covered hands on training on Arduino-based embedded systems development as a part of learning Internet of Things (IoT). The key objective of this session was to give a practical exposure on IoT for the teachers to adapt confidently to the new A/L ICT syllabus. The secondary objective was to motivate the teachers to start IoT clubs at their respective schools with the involvement of students. Dr. Chathura Rajapakse on behalf of the Corporate Consultancy and Training Wing (CCTW) of the Department of Industrial Management under its Teachers with MIT project organized the session. Dr. Keerthi Wijayasiriwardhana, Mr. Bhanu Watawana and Mr. Nirmala Liyanaarachchi, the lecturers of the Department of Industrial Management put their maximum effort to make this session a success by giving the teachers their knowledge on IoT.events/TeacherswithMIT2017

The first workshop of the series was held on the 10th November 2017 participating nearly 70 schoolteachers. Upon the request of the education authorities, the Department of Industrial Management is looking forward to conduct more workshops of similar nature to cover up every aspect of the A/L syllabus.

A retirement felicitation ceremony was organised by the Department of Industrial  Management to appreciate the service of Dr. Julian Nanayakkara at his retirement on the 8th of February 2018 at the Auditorium of Department of Industrial Management. He obtainedB.Sc. Eng. (Hon) degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering  in 1974 from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and  Ph.D. in 1983 in the area of Production Management and Manufacturing Technology from the University of Strathclyde, U.K. He worked as a lecturer, researcher and consultant to industry for over 42 years out of which initial 26 years were in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, at University of Moratuwa. He joined the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya as a Senior Lecturer in the September 2001. He was instrumental in the development and delivery of curricula at undergraduate, postgraduate and school levels in the field of engineering, technology and management in Sri Lanka and overseas. He has supervised many postgraduate students and published in many international referred journals in the areas of production operations improvement, industrial engineering, modelling, and general management.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of acting dean Prof. Senanayake, senior professors, heads and academic staff of the departments of the faculty of Science, members of the department of Industrial Management, members of department of Mechanical Engineering, industry partners, and undergraduates.

Dr. Thashika Rupasinghe, a senior lecturer of the department of Industrial Management won the Vice Chancellor’s awards 19’ for the third consecutive year under the categories of Outstanding Early Career Researcher award and the researcher with the highest number of publications from university internal research grants in the year 2018. She is the founding director for the Centre of Excellence for Strategic Brand Identity Development (CESBID), University of Kelaniya. She obtained her B.Sc. (Hons) in Industrial Management from the University of Kelaniya with a first class honours and winning the gold medal for the best student in the special degree programme and received her Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in Industrial Systems Engineering from Clemson University in USA. She has taught undergraduates of the Clemson University and won several awards for her exceptional teaching and scholarly work including the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award consecutively for 4 years, Best research at the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), USA in the Advanced Learning and Computation category, and the Best research award of Clemson Industrial Engineering in year 2009. She has set the record at the Clemson University, Department of Industrial Engineering for winning the most number of awards for teaching undergraduates. Upon completing her doctorate, she joined the SYSCO Corporation, USA the world’s largest food distributor, as a Supply chain manager overseeing the optimization and analytics. At the prestigious Vice Chancellor's awards in 2017, she won the award for the Outstanding researcher who published the highest number of research publications out of internal research grants within in the entire university and won another award for the outstanding and selfless dedication and service in the successful execution of centre of excellence for strategic brand identity development activities. She was the recipient of the prestigious Vice Chancellor's Award for the Young researcher of the year in the faculty of Science 2016 and won the outstanding Alumni Challenge Trophy of 2016 from her alma mater Sirimavo Bandaranaike girls’ school in year 2016. She is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and has published over 65 international journals and conference publications and presented at over 50 international conferences and symposia in the areas of Industrial Engineering and Supply Chain Optimization. She is an Industrial Systems Engineering consultant for leading Sri Lankan and USA-based companies and at present she is heading the Industrial Engineering division for Silueta; a sister company of MAS Holdings.
