The level one students of the Department of Industrial Management received a wealth of knowledge as well as some unique experiences during their industry visit for the Industry and Technology module. The visit was intended to give the students an exposure to both large scale industries as well as SMEs, and how the students can contribute to them in the future. The visit, scheduled on 22nd and 23rd June was destined to Hambanthota via Galle. The students visited Siam City Ruhunu Cement Factory in Galle, Malindu Dairy of Angunakolapelessa, Lanka Salt Limited Saltern in Hambanthota and Angel Aquarium in Lunugamvehera to study the operations of each of the ventures. The students also received extensive of knowledge through the stories shared by the entrepreneurs, including Mr. Manjula Nishantha of Malindu Dairy and Mr. Rohan Fernando of Angel Aquarium, on their journeys. Another session was held in Hambantota on 22nd evening, organized by Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce (HDCC), in which another group of entrepreneurs shared their knowledge and experiences with the students. The department wishes to convey heartfelt gratitude to Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce for its immense support in organizing this industry visit.

The dawn of 2018 remarked another victory for the level 2 students of the department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya, in the hackthon, 'Haxmas' which was organized by the Rotaract Club IIT in collaboration with Virtusa at Virtusa auditorium on January 13th, 2018. Team 'Zeroth', representing the Department emerged to be the winners for their tour planning mobile application “Journey”. Chathura Ranawaka, Maleesha Ranawaka, Dumindu De Silva, and Dinith Jayabodhi were the members of winning team. “Mind Labs”, the second team consisting of Akalanka Jayalath, Dharshitha Srimal, Madhavie Warnakulasooriya, from the same department emerged as the runners up for their problem reporting platform for general public "fix green".

Department of Industrial Management celebrating 50 years of excellence, the Industrial Management Science Students' Association of the department launched the thirteenth issue of 'Exposition' - the magazine that bridges Management and IT, under the theme of 'Entrepreneurship to strive towards excellence in agile era of technology', on 28th December 2017. The ceremony was successfully held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall under the auspices of Prof. D. M. Semasinghe: Vice Chancellor of University of Kelaniya, Prof. Bimali Jayawardhana: Dean of the Faculty of Science, the keynote speaker of the event Mrs. Lakmini Wijesundara; the CEO at IronOne Technologies and Mr. Maas Savanghan, Human Resources Manager of Attune Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. In addition, Ms. Emma Debalijak, Associate Manager: Creative Software, Mr. Pulasthi Wanniarachchi, Senior SEO Engineer of SEO Pula, Mr. Pasindu De Silva and Mr. Karthikan Nagularajah from Dialog IdeaMart graced the event as guest invitees.

The magazine mainly presents an exciting mixture of interviews of expertise in the corporate world, articles written by undergraduates and lecturers of Department of Industrial Management, and the achievements of the students. Exposition moves forward with the development of technology while disclosing technical knowledge and skills of the students. For the convenience of readers, the e-version of the magazine and the Exposition mobile application were also introduced at the launch.

The Vice Chancellor appreciated the high caliber of IM students and the effort they had taken to uplift the standard of the Faculty of Science. Mrs. Lakmini Wijesundara, the keynote speaker of the event shared her journey towards success with the citation by Henry Ford "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right". Dr. Ruwan Wikramarchchi, the Head of the Department of Industrial Management, stated how the IM students triumph most of the challenges they face each year. Maneesha Wickramasinghe (3rd Place), Mevuni Mendis (2nd Place) and Chathura Ranawaka (1st Place) were awarded for the best articles of the 13th issue of Exposition as the ceremony remarked its end.

The inaugural International Research Conference on Smart Computing and Systems Engineering (SCSE), organized by the Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya in conjunction with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research, was successfully held on the 29th March, 2018, at the Hotel Clarion, Kiribathgoda. The conference also had industry partnerships from the Zone 24x7, and the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). The vice chancellor of University of Kelaniya, Prof. D.M. Semasinghe graced the conference as the chief guest, which was attended by a number of international scholars from foreign universities including Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan), Tsukuba University (Japan), Yamaguchi University (Japan), Deakin University (Australia), Western Sydney University (Australia) and National Chung Hsing University (Taiwan). The conference showcased research from both Sri Lankan and international researchers in the domains of Smart Computing and Systems Engineering. The keynote addresses for the conference were delivered by Prof. Takao Terano of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Prof. Pubudu Pathirana, Director of Networked Sensing and Control (NSC) Research group at the Deakin University. The Dean of Faculty of Science, Prof. (Mrs.) B.M. Jayawardena, Dean of Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Patrick Ratnayake, and Heads of Departments of Faculty of Science also attended the conference.
