IMSSA AGM – Academic Year 2013/2014

The Annual General Meeting of the Industrial Management Science Students Association (IMSSA) was held on 01st of April 2015 at the Multimedia Auditorium of the department. The event was graced by a distinguished gathering including the Head of the Department Dr. Chamli Pushpakumara, Members of the academic staff and other invitees.  The President for the academic year 2012/2013 Mr. Chameera Mirihella presided over the event in presentation of the Financial Report for the year and election of office bearers for the new academic year.
B.Sc. MIT Freshers’ Welcome – Academic Year 2013/2014

The Welcome for the freshers who were admitted to MIT and SE degree programmes for the academic year 2013/2014 was held on 27th March 2015 at the Multimedia Auditorium of the Department of Industrial Management.  Head of the Department Dr. Chamli Pushpakumara graced the occasion along with Senior Lecturer staff, Junior Staff, non-academic staff and other invitees.  The evening was filled with various performances where new undergraduates have had the maximum opportunity to showcase their hidden talents while entertaining the audience by a culturally diversified set of performances. Senior students had also actively engaged in entertaining acts, highlighting the concept of a closely –knit family at the department.
B.Sc. MIT students won Unilever Challenge Lipton Talent Hunt 2014

The B.Sc MIT undergraduates of the Department of Industrial Management from the University of Kelaniya won the recently held Unilever Challenge – Lipton Talent Hunt-2014, an initiative launched by Unilever Sri Lanka towards empowering Sri Lankan undergraduates in business practices and sound business ideas generation. The Lipton Talent Hunt saw an enthusiastic participation from some of the country’s leading private and public universities.
With the Unilever Challenge – Lipton Talent Hunt, The competition gave the undergraduates business oriented experiential training and also the opportunity to participate in an internationally recognized atmosphere of business. It has captured the imagination of the young university students in Sri Lanka and has also become a benchmark of talent and experience for young undergraduates. The Lipton team contributed to the success of the students, conducting multiple coaching and mentoring sessions, while preparing them for the planning and strategic direction phases. The grand finale was held on 1st of December 2014 Hotel Galadari - Colombo, with four teams who made it to the finals. The participant universities at the finals were the University of Kelaniya, APIIT, University of Colombo and UCSC. This pave them an opportunity to explore and obtain hands-on experience in brand management as a career option at Unilever, while reviewing the possibility of entering a world class career with Unilever.
B.Sc MIT Kelaniya University Team mentored by Mrs. Gamithri Karunasena, impressed the judges with their innovative application and practical approach. The best 3 participants in the Finale will be given the opportunity to visit the Lipton Brand team in UK and will also gain direct entry into the future leaders league London Program.
MAS Awards - Most Outstanding Student Of the Year

The B.Sc MIT students of the Department of Industrial Management from the University of Kelaniya won the, MAS Holdings award for the Most Outstanding Student at the recently held MAS Awards Ceremony for the Best Overall Student 2014.
Ms. Likmini Weerakoon won the 2010/2011 Most Outstanding Student award, while Ms. Sandeepa Kannangara and Mr. Dilum Caldera won the 2nd and 3rd places.
Mr. Hiyann Perera won the 2011/2012 Most Outstanding Student award, while Ms. Matheesha Patalee and Ms. Malsha Kalubowila won the 2nd and 3rd places.

10th issue of the Magazine "Exposition" was launched at the BMICH on 20th October 2014

The Exposition, the magazine which bridges the knowledge streams of Management and the field of IT was launched for the 10th consecutive year by the students of the B.Sc. in Management and Technology degree programme of the Department of Industrial Management, University of Kelaniya at the BMICH, Colombo on the 20thOctober 2014. The occasion was graced by the acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilanthi De Silva and many prominent corporate personnel from leading conglomerates from Sri Lanka. The Industrial Management Science Student Association (IMSSA) put together a very impressive agenda with a panel discussion on “Entrepreneurs for the 21st Century" lead by leading entrepreneurs from Sri Lankan business arena (Mr. Nayana Dehigama and Mr. Tharindu Ameresekere ) and senior academic, Dr. Julian Nanayakkara. The awards for the best articles were won by Mr. Dashanka Warnakulasooriya ( "Where are our Million dollar babies?"), Mr. Malith Sureweere ("Living through the rise, cliff and fall of marketing"), and Ms. G.M.P. Sandaruwini ("Let's clinch the buzzword and pull off your Supply Chain") respectively.
Several undergraduates were recognized at the event for their outstanding performances in the Intra University Debate Competition (Mr. Inesh Pererra, Mr. Bilal Hasan, Mr. Malith Suraweera, Ms. Asma Zineera - 1st runner-up) , Women’s  Hackathon 2014 (Ms. Waruni Shashikala, Ms. Hiroshi Perera, Ms. Dilupi Wijesekara, Ms. Pulani Ranasinghe - 1st runner-up) , Intra University Best Speaker Contest (Mr. Bilal Hasasn - Best Speaker award, Mr. Darshatha Gmage - 2nd runner-up) , HSBC Youth Entreprise Awards (Mr. Nuwan Wanninayakka & Ms. Inoka Udayangani - 1st runner-up) , MAS Most Outstanding Student of the Year  (Mr. Hiyann Perera - 2013, Ms. Lakmali Weerakoon - 2012)

MIT students won the best speaker award and the 2nd runner up award at the Grand Finale of the “Best Speaker -2014” competition organized by the Gavel Club of UoK

Second year MIT student Bilaal Hassan won "The best speaker award 2014" and first year MIT student, Darshatha Gamage became the 2nd runner up at the Grand Finale of the “Best Speaker -2014” competition organized by the Gavel Club of UoK.
MIT students win 1st Runner Up award and Rs, 200,000 at British Council HSBC Youth Enterprise Awards 2014

Second year MIT students, Wijeyantha Nuwan Wanninayaka and Inoka Udayangani Munasinghe,  have won the 1st Runner up award in British Council HSBC Youth Enterprise Awards 2014. This was for their product "Eggie Sausage".
Workshop on developing resources and skills for promoting student-centred learning outcomes

A workshop on developing resources and skills for promoting student-centred learning outcomes was successfully conducted for the staff and the visiting lectures of the Department of Industrial Management on 7th and 8th of August at the department premises, under the HETC Project.

The programme was conducted by Professor Kalyani Perera from the University of Peradeniya.

This initial workshop was conducted as part of the initiative to shift from a traditional teacher centered learning environment to a more student centered learning environment. The workshop was targtted at staff to provide them the necessary knowledge and skills and more importantly the exposure to experienced resource persons who have implemented such programmes previously.

Felicitation Ceremony for Mrs. Sita Jayasinghe was held on 07th July 2014 @ Department of Industrial Management

A felicitation ceremony was held on 7th July 2014 at the Department of Industrial Management for retired Mrs. Sita Jayasinghe, Senior Technical Officer, recognizing her services to the department. Mrs. Jayasinghe and, academic and non-academic staff and other invitees attended the event. Mrs. Jayasinghe was presented with a plaque by the Dr. Suren Peter, Senior Lecturer of the department, expressing gratitude. Speeches of appreciation and lunch were the main highlights of the event. Mrs. Sita Jayasinghe retired on 7th July 2014 after 31 years of university service.

Product/Service Design & Development Competition

As part of the IMMG 21063 – Operations Management lecture series, the Department of Industrial Management had organized a Product/ Service Design & Development Competition for the MIT Second Year Students on May 7 th 2014. There were about 32 very innovative product displays and the first, second, and third places were won by the “Eggie Sausage” , the Green Pencil, and the “Tea Tablet” development teams.Congratulations to all the participants

The Department wishes to congratulate the MIT team that won the second place of the Women's Hakathon 2014, organized by SLASSCOM in collaborate with Microsoft and United States Embassy in Sri Lanka.
Retirement after 40 years of dedicated service-Prof. Munasinghe & Prof. Degamboda

The faculty and the students of the DIM honored Prof. Munasignhe and Prof. Degamoda retirement after 40 years of dedicated service to the DIM as well as University of Kelaniya on the 22nd of January 2014.

Professor Lalith Munasinghe

He has served as the Head of the Department of Industrial Management for over fifteen years and has contributed immensely to the present success of the department. Professor Munasinghe who was the architect of many programmes at DIM at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels was also a key person behind the introduction of IT and many other important features into the IM curricula. Prof. Munasinghe has also served as the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science on several occasions. During his tenure as the head of the Computer Unit from December 1990 till September 2000, he commenced the computer literacy programme for the entire student community at the University of Kelaniya in January 1993 for the first time in Sri Lanka, developed study materials in Sinhala, and took the initiative to popularize IT among non-Science graduates. He was commended by the then Vice Chairman, UGC for his contributions to develop IT education in Sri Lanka. He was instrumental in setting up the ‘Centre for Enterprise Management Information  Services’ in  collaboration with UNIDO and the Ministry of Industrial Development, Sri Lanka and has been a key resource person of  many consultancy activities undertaken by DIM. He also played a key role in initiating an advanced international training programme on small and medium enterprise management development for the participants from six countries. As a key person behind the formulation of the Faculty proposal for the Science and Technology Personnel Development Project through which the Faculty received more than Rs. 200 million for PhDs,   short term training, postgraduate scholarships, buildings, equipment, books etc. He also served as the university Coordinator of the Science and Technology Personnel Development Project from 1997 to 2000 where he setup the science faculty postgraduate library and coordinated all activities of the Faculty of Science. The current building of the department with all modern facilities was built at this time according to his vision of creating an environment conducive for higher education. Professor Munasinghe is an exemplary figure in the academic community who had worked whole heartedly for the growth of his department and the education system at large while doing justice to his role as a loving husband and farther.

Professor Sunanda Degamboda

Professor Sunanda Degamboda, is an eminent person in the field of management.

During this time he contributed to the development of the department, University and the nation at large. Professor Degamboda was a key person behind the introduction of many innovative programmes, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, at the department. In addition to serving as the head of the Department of Industrial Management, he has been a resource person in the staff development programme and was a key member of the team that developed the initial corporate plan for the University. At the national level, Prof. Degamboda has contributed in areas such as vocational training reforms and skills development. He was a member of Industry sector committee of the National Development Council of the Ministry of Finance, Planning, Ethnic Affairs and National Integration. During the long career of over forty years, Prof. Degamboda has worked with the University of Kelaniya, IRDC(Canada), ROCHE(Canada), Open University of Sri Lanka, OECD(Japan), UNDP, UNIDO, Postgraduate Institute of Management, ITC(Geneva), the World Bank, Commonwealth of Learning, (Canada), Sri Lankan Airlines, over ten leading private companies, and three NGOs in the areas of teaching and training, research, venture management, marketing management, consulting, and entrepreneur and executive training. He has worked as a visiting professor of the Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Keele, and Sheffield Hallam University of UK.

Prof. Degamboda has authored over thirty research articles and books during his academic career and has been a consultant or a trainer to many renowned local and foreign businesses and governments institutions.

Investment week 2013- “Intra University Debate Competition

Department of Industrial Management became the 1st runner-up at the “Intra University Debate Competition” conducted parallel to the Investment week 2013 organized by Finance Students’ Association of University of Kelaniya together with Department of Finance. The team consisted of Inesh Perera(Captain), Asma Zinneera, Bilaal Hassan and Malith Sureweere.
Malith Sureweere won three medals for the best performance at the SLIM 2013 Certification Ceremony

Malith Sureweere became the most awarded student of the SLIM 2013 Certification Ceremony, by winning three medals for the best performance in Economics and Legal Impact (ELI), Discovering Effective Communication (DEC) and Driving Brands for Results (Brand Management/DBR), scoring the highest aggregate of each.
Annual Pirith Ceremony 2012

The annual pirith ceremony organized by the Industrial Management Science Students’ Association (IMSSA) was held on 1st and 2nd of December 2012, at the department of Industrial Management. The Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, the most venerable Welamitiyawe Dharmakirthi Sri Kusaladhamma Thero and many other members of the academic and non-academic staff, and large number of past and present students participated in the event. The pirith ceremony was broadcasted through a live webcast for others to witness the event over the Internet.

Mr. Nandasena's Farewell Party

A felicitation ceremony was held on 24th November 2012 at the Department of Industrial Management for retired Mr. L. P. Nandasena, recognizing his services to the department. Mr. Nandasena and his family and, academic and non-academic staff attended the event. Mr. Nandasena was presented with a plaque by the head of the department, Dr. Chamli Pushpakumara, expressing gratitude. Speeches of appreciation and lunch followed by a musical were the main highlights of the event. Mr. Nandasena retired on 7th July 2012 after 27 years of university service.
CIMA Mind Challenge 2010

Team "MIT - University of Kelaniya" was placed First Runner-Up at the CIMA Mind Challenge 2010, held on the 8th of August 2010 at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel. The CIMA Mind Challenge, the annual quiz program organized by the CIMA Students' Society, comprised of two rounds. The first round saw 30 teams vying to be one of the top eight teams who would compete in the second round. After a tough first round of questions, team " MIT – University of Kelaniya " secured a place in the top eight. The second round was intensely competitive, with contestants striving to be the first to answer the questions correctly. At the end of it Team " MIT – University of Kelaniya " emerged as the First Runner-Up.

The team comprised of a graduate and four undergraduates of the Department of Industrial Management -Jeevani Perera, Harshani Halangoda and Gian Jayawardena, Chanaka Karunasena, and Thilini Weerasuriya.
Dialog Workshop

A workshop was conducted by resource personnel from Dialog Telcom Plc to improve the soft skills of the BSc MIT undergraduates.
MSc(MIT) Research Proposal Preparation Workshop

A workshop was held at Browns Beach Hotel, Negombo on 15th/16th August 2009 to finalise the reserach proposals of the 2008 intake oft he MSc in MIT programme.
50th Annivesary Exhibition

The 50th anniversary exhibition was held at the University premises on 28th,29th and 30th. The students of the DIM also participated with an impressive collection of exhibits and projects.
ABAS donates ERP system

ABAS Software AG , a German based enterprise application provider through Providence Network & Solutions in Sri Lanka, donated an ERP system worth over Rs.12 million to the department to be used for academic purposes.
